CBT - Cognitive
Behavioural Therapy
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is currently being promoted as a "solution"
to emotional difficulties. CBT works for some people and not for others.
Therefore it is essential to have a full assessment session with a trained
counsellor/therapist to plan your programme of emotional care.
I believe CBT
can be useful to challenge negative thoughts and behavioural reactions
which may have built up over a period of time. For some people dealing
with the current thoughts and behaviours facilitates a movement into well
being. For other people there is a need to explore how these behaviours
and thought patterns built in the past and to move at a slower past towards
personal change and resolve. The assessment session with help identify
your current needs and to plan the most effective way forward.
CBT is based
on the assumption that most unwanted thinking patterns and emotional and
behavioural reactions are learned over a long period of time. The aim
is to identify the thinking that is causing the unwanted feelings and
behaviours and to learn to replace these with more positive thoughts and
behaviours.
CBT takes a
commitment from clients not only to work in the session with the therapist,
but to also work between sessions with tasks to try at home. These tasks
are negotiated and set with you in the session. I will help you to try
to learn to control your negative thoughts and anxiety by changing patterns
of behaviour. I hope to help you set more positive life goals for yourself
and increase your self esteem.
There are many
CBT resources available from books to read (bibliotherapy) to relaxation
techniques - to stress reduction strategies and work sheets to create
your own portfolio of personal development and change.
